Know that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps his gracious covenant loyalty for a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commands.

What does it mean that God is faithful? It means that he is a man of his word. It means that when he makes a promise that he will keep that promise. It means that he is the same God yesterday, today and tomorrow. It means that we can rely on him through every season.

Deuteronomy means “the second telling of the law”. The book takes place during the days of Moses. Moses is preaching to the people of God prior to them entering Canaan, the promised land. He is reminding them of their special covenant relationship with God and the conditions of that covenant relationship. Moses is retelling the covenant story to remind everyone of God’s faithfulness and to call them to remain faithful to him.

So much in life changes. Our jobs change. Our bodies change. Our plans change. Our homes change. Our relationships change. Change is everywhere in our lives. Is anything constant? God is the one constant that we can depend on. His character and promises will never change.

What does God promise us? He promises us forgiveness in Jesus (1 John 1:9). He promises us eternal life and a heavenly home (John 3:16; John 14:1-3). He promises to love us as his children (John 1:12). He promises to be with us always (Matthew 28:20). He promises he will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). These promises will come true, because God is faithful.

There is a mountain in Phoenix, AZ called Camelback Mountain. Google it. It looks like a camel. I hiked it as a teenager. The hike is challenging, but offers beautiful views for anyone who endures the 2.5 hour trek.

I returned to hike the mountain with my wife years after moving away. Nothing had changed. We enjoyed the same challenging hike and the same beautiful views. Through years of rain, wind and change, the mountain was unmoved. The trip with my wife is nearly a decade past. If I returned to Camelback today, I fully expect to find the same exact mountain ready to welcome me home.

God is like the mountain. He is unchanging and steadfast. He is unmoved in his character and word.

Moses calls the people of God to know God is faithful. Knowing God is faithful means believing and being confident. We trust God and believe he is a man of his word. So, know that God is faithful to you today. He will fulfill his promises. Also, choose to be faithful to him in all you say and do.
