After Jesus rose from the grave, he appeared to his disciples on several occasions. At one point he appeared to some of them while they were fishing. When Peter realized it was Jesus, Scripture tells us that “he tied his outer clothing around him (for he had taken it off) and plunged into the sea.” Peter, who had denied Christ, runs towards his Savior with great affection and enthusiasm. He jumps at the opportunity.
Then, while they were on the beach by a fire, they share a meal of fresh fish. After eating, Jesus asks Peter three times “Do you love me?” Three times Peter said “Yes, Lord.” Then Jesus called him to “Feed my sheep.” Three times Peter denied Christ, and three times Jesus gives Peter a second chance to affirm his devotion and calling. A very redemptive opportunity indeed!
This passage reminds us of our first calling to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. I find it amazing that Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?” Jesus, the Son of God, is worthy of the same loving devotion of which only God is worthy. Peter, knowing the glory and grace of Christ, quickly affirms his love for Jesus. With a heart motivated by loving devotion, Peter is then commanded by Jesus to shepherd the flock. “Feed my sheep.” Notice the order there. We love Jesus first. Therefore, we serve him out of a loving devotion.
What would you say to Jesus, if he asked you three times this morning over breakfast “Do you love me?” Sometimes our awareness of our sins gives us a deep sense of shame that keeps us from moving closer to Jesus. We feel unworthy and stay at a distance. Remember that Peter’s denials were fully forgiven by the work of the cross. In the same way, we can move towards Jesus without shame knowing our sins are completely washed away by his sacrifice.
Loving Jesus is the starting point. Before we serve him, we sit with him, and we love him. Take a moment today to sit with Jesus. In view of his great love, answer this simple question that he asks all of us “Do you love me?”
May we all love Jesus more today and know he loved us first.
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for loving us first. Thank you for moving towards us when we had nothing to offer you. Thank you for moving towards us in our sin and shame. Thank you for complete forgiveness and freedom. Thank you that you welcome us to sit with you in your presence. We love you. We will serve you today because we love you. Amen.
